I Built a Business. Then I Had to Tell People About It.
I built Pretty Unruly from the ground up.
It actually started as an idea for a slightly unhinged little boutique. But somewhere along the way, I thought, “Nope. That's not it.”
So I brainstormed. I explored different ideas. And then one day, I thought, “You know what? I want to get paid to party.”
And BAM. Apparently, that was all my brain needed.
Suddenly, the ideas wouldn't stop. Party planning turned into card games, an unruly twist on a regular deck of playing cards, future game expansions, merchandise, this blog, and approximately a thousand other ideas I haven't figured out what to do with yet.
Eventually, I reached the point where I could finally launch my website and introduce Pretty Unruly on social media.
I was SO excited.
And then...
I got cold feet.
I stared at my computer screen for hours, trying to figure out what to post. How do I introduce myself? How do I explain this business I've spent so much time building? How do I make people understand what I'm trying to create?
And then my brain did what brains do best.
It spiraled.
What if people don't like it?
What if people don't understand what I'm trying to do?
What if everyone telling me this is a great idea is secretly thinking I've completely lost my mind?
One little doubt turned into another, and before I knew it, I'd spent nearly three weeks putting off something I'd been so excited to do.
Actually telling people about my business.
Finally, I gave myself a pep talk and decided:
Fuck it. I'm doing it anyway.
Maybe not everyone will like it. That's okay.
Maybe some people won't understand it.
Or maybe, just maybe, I'm completely wrong about what everyone else is thinking.
Maybe people will love it.
Maybe the idea of getting together with friends, making memories, and not treating fun like something you have to earn will resonate with people.
And maybe the only way to find out is to stop overthinking and actually put myself out there.
So I did.
I created a simple introduction post, followed by a funny Reel about the absolutely ridiculous parts of creating content for a small business.
And you know what?
I felt good about it.
Not because I suddenly had thousands of followers or customers knocking down my door. But because I finally did the thing I'd spent weeks talking myself out of.
I put myself out there.
I'm just getting started, and I have to keep moving forward. I can't keep letting my own brain talk me out of something that could turn into something really great.
Because underneath all the sarcastic comments, questionable humor, and slightly unhinged ideas, the real message behind Pretty Unruly is simple.
Connection.
Make the plans.
Host the parties.
Play the stupid games.
Laugh until your stomach hurts.
And stop letting the mundane tasks and everyday responsibilities convince you that having fun is something you have to earn.
Life is already full of things we have to do.
Pretty Unruly is about making time for the things we want to do.
And if you're wondering whether I've magically overcome my fear of putting myself out there? Absolutely not. I'm still figuring it out, one slightly chaotic decision at a time. But I built this thing, I believe in it, and I'm going to give it a real shot.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go find a song I'm legally allowed to use in a 15-second TikTok.
Apparently, starting a business was the easy part.
